A side table gets used more than almost any other piece of furniture in the living room and most people treat it as an afterthought. The remote goes there. The wine glass. The book you keep meaning to finish. Your phone charging overnight even though you know you shouldn’t. The table needs to handle all of that without wobbling, without looking cluttered, and without becoming invisible the way purely functional furniture tends to.
