The side table is one of those pieces that nobody thinks about until they don't have one. Then suddenly there's a coffee cup balanced on an armrest and a phone charger trailing across the floor and a stack of books that has somehow become a permanent fixture on the carpet. We've thought about this a lot. A good side table does its job without making a fuss.
